Development of a 9-seat, Electric Seaplane

Project Duration
Jun 2022 – Sep 2024
Project partners
ELFLY AS
Project Description
ELFLY Group in Norway is working on the development and certification of an electric seaplane. I joined Elflys early engineering team in 2022. I worked mostly on the Noemi project for the design and development of a 9-seat, electric seaplane.
My Contribution
- Led conceptual aircraft design, downselecting the configurations using tradeoff matrices and OpenVSP models.
- Sized the wing & stabilizers, including planform definition, and control surface sizing.
- Evaluated and selected airfoils for all lifting surfaces.
- Identified appropriate airfoils with matching characteristics for scale model testing
- Developed an aerodynamic drag model of the whole aircraft.
- Created performance analysis tool to model range across mission segments, reserves, and power profiles as required by certification.
- Supported Airworthiness team by structuring CS-23 Level 3 certification requirements and Means of Compliance for the Flight Physics domain.
- Established the aircraft’s weight & balance and inertia models
- Led the aircraft design activities and coordinated the engineering team.
- Authored/reviewed design reports covering performance, hydrodynamics, fuselage architecture, materials, and manufacturing.
- Contributed to fuselage and hydrodynamic design, reviewing technical outputs from team members.
- Supported company growth through technical interviews, onboarding new engineers.
- Routinely provided presentations to the whole team including management, on important design decisions and trade-offs.
