Design of Auxiliary Wing Floats
Design, Sizing and CAD-model of Auxiliary Wing Floats

Project Duration
Oct 2024 – Dec 2024
Project partners
ELFLY AS
Project Description
Auxiliary floats are most commonly found on the wings of 'flying-boat' type seaplanes and are used to stabilize the aircraft when floating on the water. Following a multidisciplinary analysis and evaluation of existing solutions, the architecture and design parameters of the auxiliary wing floats for the ELFLY Noemi 9-seat electric seaplane were selected. The aerodynamics, water loads and float and strut mass were assessed to ensure optimality and compliance with certification requirements.
My Contribution
- Developed spreadsheet models for aerodynamic drag and water loads.
- Defined the wing float and strut geometry to minimize structural weight and drag.
- Developed a spreadsheet application for auxiliary wing float sizing.
- Iterated the spanwise placement of the float with respect to loads and customer requirements.
- Drew the CAD-model of the auxiliary float and strut outer mold line (ONL).
