Single-Seat Electric Flying Wing Concept

Project Duration
Apr 2022 – Dec 2024
Project partners
Kristián Kierulf
Project Description
Development and scale model flight testing of a single-seat, flying wing aircraft configuration. The configuration is inspired by the Verhees Delta, but uses a higher aspect ratio wing for increased aerodynamic efficiency. The design is intended to be a low-cost, easy-to-build aircraft with a wing-integrated electric energy storage system.
My Contribution
- Developed and analyzed the aircraft configuration in a multidisciplinary design spreadsheet.
- Drew a CAD model of the aircraft OML in Onshape.
- Prototyped a sub-scale RC-model in foam and glass-fiber positive construction manufactured using hand-layup method.
- Performed flight testing, revealing the need for a corrected thrustline angle and propeller placement.
- Implemented design changes based on flight test results, including a new propeller placement and thrustline angle.
